Event 02: Wishing on a Star Firefly
☙Pupating Fireflies
Fireflies usually pupate in late spring, but for some reason these tiny pupa have been popping up everywhere in the labyrinth. Small, armored bug-like creatures which do nothing but hang out on leaves, their underbellies glowing softly. Wishes on them though get a glowy blink and then no matter what it is you wish for, a flower begins to grow from the top of your head. They did say to wish on a firefly and not on this wriggly little bug, after all.
Worse yet, the flower changes colour depending on your emotions. Deep red for anger, sunny yellow for happiness, and blue for sadness, with colors mingling for anything more complicated than that. They are only flowers after all, and eloquence isn't their strongest suit.
☙Star Fireflies Emerge
About a week after the fireflies pupate, you get a blue screen and a new mission:
Find a partner and capture a Star Firefly and make a wish!
Go forth into the Yggdrasil Labyrinth and you will find all the fireflies have emerged from their pupas overnight! Speaking to the various NPCs, you will get some clues as to where to find them and how to catch them.
One NPC says, “I think I heard the Star Fireflies like hanging out near water!”
Another NPC says, “If you catch one you can wish on them like on a star! But you need to make the wish with one other person!”
A third NPC says, “I caught a Star Firefly and it attacked me! Maybe it was just me but I could have sworn its light flashed red for a second…”
But yet another NPC says, “Those Star Fireflies! When I caught one with my husband we wished to be together forever and we became stuck together for a week until we managed to catch another one!”
Other NPCs may give tips on how to use the Star Net and Star Containers (sold at Napier’s Firm for a limited time only!) So do the RPG thing! Go talk to everyone!
A. Catching the Star Fireflies
The fireflies are about the size of your fists and they can only be caught by a Star Net bought from Napier’s Firm. They will burn through anything else. Place them into the Star Container, then hold it together and make a wish!.
Naturally, while you’re chasing the Star Fireflies the usual dangers of the Labyrinth are still there. Don’t focus so hard on catching them or making your wish that you enter the range of the Ragelope.
B. Those Pesky Mimics Again!
The mimic pupa from before also emerged and became fireflies! Unlike the Star Fireflies once caught in a net they will burst out of it and grow to the size of a monster! Cue the battle music and the fight begins! Beware, the Monster Firefly's light will call more of its allies to battle. Finish it off quick!
...or run away, that works too.
Before it shows its true colours, there is one way to tell the difference between is that the mimic’s light will flash red every so often unlike the Star Firelfies whose light only pulses a warm yellow.

Hiroki Yuu | Bokura no Kiseki
[...look, she knows it said fireflies not pupas but she was curious if it'd work.
And now she's sitting beside the fountain in town, watching her reflection as she pokes the flower on her head.]
...is this like one of those mood rings?
ii: Catching fireflies
[She's actually gone bug catching before when she was younger so she's all ready with a net over her shoulder and a container in her other hand. All she's missing now is a partner.
She's not exactly picking so she goes up to the first non-NPC she spots with a bright smile.]
Hey, want to go bug catching with me?
Wishing
"Does it change colors with your mood?" [ His neutral tone made it hard to tell if he was being cheeky or thought she was stupid. ]
no subject
Besides, assume good intentions and all that...she supposed.
So she looked up at him with a shrug.]
It seems to.
[In the meantime, what had been a a purple flower (curiosity) had shades of grey in it before it shifted back to an optimistic orange as she spoke with a smile, her expression perfectly friendly with little indication on her face what that brief grey was all about..]
I was a little worried it'd give me a...hm. I think the word would be a debuff? Or even some kind of status ailment. So I'm kind of relieved this is all it does.
[She doesn't play a lot of RPGs but she has played some at least.]
no subject
What do you mean by a 'debuff' or 'status ailment'?
[ His life has consisted of exactly 0 video games.
Depending the answer, he would probably rather deal with an ailment or debuff of some kind, though he imagined his own flower would be permanently grey. ]
no subject
...before I answer that, do you have video games where you're from or RPGs?
[Because her explanation might have to be worded a little differently depending on the answer to that!]
I have a very vivid memory of replying to this? I'm so sorry for making you wait this long
I am aware that games exist where I am from. I did not play them so I am not familiar with them.
it happens to all of us
[She hadn't wanted to assume but she wasn't surprised either.]
There's this sort of game where I'm from called roleplaying games. In them, you play through a story as a character, usually you'd be fighting monsters and how strong your character is, is determined by their stats...things like attack, defense, magic, speed... [She raises a finger for each one...then waves her hand because...she's pretty sure there's enough to give someone the point!] ...stuff like that! A debuff is an attack or an item that causes your stats to fall temporarily.
Status ailments are things like poison or confusion or...um. Blindness? It affects your character's ability to fight in the game.
[And here is the part that she finds a little crazy herself. The flower on her head turns slightly blue for uncertainty before it returns to the previous colour.]
Since this place reminds me of one of those, it makes sense that this [She gestures at the flower on her head.] might cause one of those.
Re: Hiroki Yuu | Bokura no Kiseki
The sight of them at night was beautiful afterall.
A bright young woman interrupts her from her thoughts, but when she hears why, Pinya answers with a smile of her own.]
You know, I had a mind to go and catch a couple of my own.
no subject
I'm not sure about this whole wishes business but completing missions is probably a good thing, right?
[If...they're going by video game logic. Which she thinks is a pretty good guess all things considered. Then she shifts her equipment a little, balancing the container on her hip with a carefree smile.]
I'm Hiroki Yuu, my job class is a warlock. I'd offer to shake your hand but my hands are a little full at the moment.
no subject
Wishes are usually more trouble than they're worth back in my realm, unless you're a fair Lawyer or cunning wordsmith. I hope they don't carry such dire consequences here... Though I suppose I want to find out if they are or not.
[She had fallen trap to one too many cursed objects that would grant someone's Wishes, and honestly the less said about those the better. But curiosity killed the Coeurl and all that.]
Now completing a mission on the other hand, that should be just fine! I do so like getting paid.
I'm Piñara, though just call me Pinya, my full name is reserved for ceremonies, my mother, and my girlfriend when I get in way more trouble than I should be in. I'm a Rover.
[She grins, clearly a bit of a trickster.]
no subject
[She's never really met a girl like this. Not in Zerestria but also not in Japan. Though she misses Haruko (and Rida)'s steadfastness, Momoka's bashful but kind nature and Maki's calm, collected coolness this is also nice.]
Pinya, then. It's nice to meet you. [A rover class...let's see...she thinks she might have heard the Guildmaster mention that when she went through all the explanation. It was a class that used bows, right...?]
Guess we'll have to keep our distance if we run into trouble.
IM SORRY I DID THE THING WHERE I READ THE TAG THEN WAS LIKE 'I have responded to this' BUT I DIDNT
"You'd be surprised how many Lawyers use Fae logic rules as practice and exercises in my home city," she laughs. It had been a game her mother would play with her and her siblings when she was younger. If they could successfully convince her that there really was a reason they needed an entire jar of sweets then perhaps they deserved it.
She was very, very hard to convince.
"It's nice to meet you too, Ms. Yuu," she gives a bow with a little flourish, and it's then that a large black wolf trots up to her side. The beast looks over Hiroki with his piercing yellow eyes, tilts his head in thought, and then promptly shoves his snout into Pinya's empty hand.
"Ah- hey! Fen!"
SEPTEMBER HAS BEEN KILLING ME I'M SO SORRY. Also I'm fine switching to prose!
Hiroki has never actually seen a wolf up close before. They didn't have them in Tokyo and as for Rainesburg Castle, they most just had squirrels, rabbits, foxes...small, harmless creatures.
So she bent down slightly. "Fen, huh? I didn't think a wolf would be this cute."
IT IS OKAY I THINK SEPTEMBER IS A LIMINAL SPACE????
Pinya gives a dramatic sigh, ruffling the fluff between Fenrir's ears with a smirk.
"Hear that, Fen? You're cute!" Fenrir's huff and rolling of his eyes gives away his sapience. The Direwolf looks at Hiroki for a moment, and then bows calmly, tail swishing lazily behind him.
"He says 'It's nice to meet you' and also, I think he's asking for more pets."
THAT MAKES SENSE
She's happy to give Fen more pets if it meant she doesn't have to look at anyone directly as she considered that question.
If she could wish for whatever she'd probably...wish to see the princess again even if it'd be awkward. She could wish to be stronger to not feel likr she can't even live up to her strength in her previous life (where even with that greater strength, skill and training the castle had still fallen).
But those were too depressing and raised too many questions.
Besides. They would never be granted so easily.
So after a flicker in her expression she smiled.
"I guess I might wish for gold? Or good equipment. Maybe something that will give me some kind of elemental protection! Those kinds of things are useful in games, right?"
And then she goes from petting to try to squish Fen's face gently between her hands.
"Has he always been this friendly?
October... also liminal qwq
"And... games?" She asks, not entirely knowing what the other woman means.
Fenrir's eyes blink, but he's not opposed to the oddly relaxing change of petting. He's surely had it done enough times from Pinya herself, after all.
"Not at the beginning; we've been together for a couple of years at this point, and I think I've rubbed off on him," she laughs.
I
Of course, Veronica has a corresponding flower on her own head, and it blooms a bright, sunny yellow when their eyes meet.]
What is... a mood ring?
no subject
She...she knows that voice.
Her heart is pounding and she hastily reaches up to cover the flower, practically smooshing it against her head before it could give away what she's feeling. What could be seen of the petals between her fingers is very little but it flashes through a variety of colours: orange for surprise, a purplish colour for disbelief and finally red.
Then she looks up, her eyes wide with recognition but also confusion.]
...Princess Veronica?

[Not far into the Labyrinth from the entance, Dust weighs both a net and a container in his hands. He suspects, though isn't certain, that a swift transfer is absolutely necessary, but the net is too unwieldy to make that feasible. Too bad Fidget isn't here..]
[So, no help for it. Dust glances back along the path, and when he sees someone approaching...]
Could I get your help with something really simple for a minute?
Labyrinth Rage
[Dust is panting, which is very uncommon for him, as he crouches down not far from the stairs. He still has his sword in one hand, though the other actually supports him.]
That thing... is too dangerous. We need to stop it. At least someone else, probably more with me.
Labyrinth Rage
[She'd wandered into the labyrinth to get some training in but she spots a familiar someone...and from what she can see there's definitely something up.
She crosses the distance in a leap and lands near him, surprisingly quiet.]
What's wrong?
no subject
The creature down there... it's not that it's strong, but I'm too weak to handle it right now.
no subject
Do you need any healing items? [She still pronounces the words like they're foreign to her but she at least does have some.]
no subject
no subject
What did you run into?
no subject
It looked like a giant deer. A giant, very angry deer.
no subject
[She frowns.]
I've never seen an angry deer.
[Probably the most worrisome thing here is...she doesn't sound worried. She sounds like she's considering something.
Perhaps even something along the lines of 'can I fight it?']
no subject
Right now, I couldn't handle it. Not alone. We'd need several of us and a coordinated assault.

Sorry September ate me alive
[That is not how that works!]
Here's hoping October is better!
Here's hoping!!
[She's pouting. That's the only way to describe her expression at the moment, petulant and put off but grudgingly accepting.]
This place is the worst.
no subject
Star Light, Star Bright, but I missed all of the DDR cues and I'm suffering.
Oh! Hello, Dust. Are you out here to catch some of the fabled Fireflies?
no subject
no subject
I can hold a jar or two! All part of our heroic duties I suppose.
[She reaches to take the jar out from Dust's hands, carefully angling it so that he can simply swipe the bugs directly into it.]
no subject
[Catching a firefly is not really a feat when so many flit about, and you're reasonably fast as Dust is. A quick swipe through the air and he smacks the net down over the jar in the same motion.]
no subject
Perhaps, though I've spent years in the business and done everything from slaying gods to delivering groceries for the old woman who lives on the hill.
[She shrugs as she says it, as though she doesn't know you could simply decline those requests. She does, but she also doesn't like leaving people in need if she can make a difference.]

"The adventerous Saga of the one and only Illustrous Pinara Conada," how does that sound?
no subject
[Hey, she'd asked. But his smile and the warmth in his voice make the jibe gentle.]
no subject
"The Amazing Piñara" will have to do, then!
